The Department of Radiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is committed to improving health care in Mississippi and around the world through imaging research and technology development.
Radiology research mission
- To facilitate the research mission of UMMC and support intra-departmental, inter-departmental and inter-institutional imaging research in human studies and clinical trials, translational research, epidemiologic and health disparities research, and animal research.
- To provide an environment and facility that fosters development of externally funded research proposals.
- To promote and facilitate faculty and trainee research in the field of radiology.
The Division of Radiology Research has pursued research in oncology (head and neck cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, renal cancer, melanoma, etc.), thoracic imaging, genitourinary imaging, gastrointestinal imaging, cardiac imaging, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear imaging, neuro imaging, fetal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, epidemiologic and health disparities research and imaging, and animal imaging. We conduct research utilizing new and advanced computer programming, advanced image processing tools, 3D imaging, 1.5T and 3T MRI, advanced CT imaging, ultrasound and PET CT.
Most research studies are moving targets and difficult to list as they often develop and lead to new studies and ideas. We actively collaborate with the Jackson Heart Study, the MIND Center on the ARIC and GENOA studies, the Mississippi Obesity Center, and the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research (MCCTR). We collaborate with other institutions on multiple projects, many of which were initiated and run through UMMC. We participate in several national cooperative groups for oncologic studies (ACRIN, SWOG, CALGB, and GOG). We support studies from other investigators across our institution, and we actively collaborate with industry on multiple projects. We support the development of new clinical trials and novel ideas and patents from our investigators.
Our Advanced Imaging Core Laboratory offers basic and advanced image interpretation and data management for industry, private or federally funded studies.
The research mission of the Department of Radiology is supported by Mississippi state funds, UMMC Cancer Institute, University of Mississippi Health Care, University Hospital, and federal, foundation, and industry-sponsored grants. Much of our research is conducted after hours and is not part of a standard workday. Our researchers are working to improve the lives of our diverse patients. This is the mission of UMMC.
